Ambler Borough
Ambler Borough is a wonderful, lively community home to the historic refurbished Ambler Theater. There are a wide variety of local restaurants, pubs, small local shops and businesses that make strolling Main Street in Ambler a pleasure.
Ambler Main Street is a non-profit organization involving more than 100 volunteers. It is dedicated to helping “Downtown Ambler” remain a social, cultural and business center for Ambler and the surrounding areas including Upper Dublin, Lower Gwynedd and Whitpain.
In the summer people line up to get a refreshing treat at Rita’s in Amber and of course visit Cone Heads in Ambler for breakfast and lunch, or just for ice cream.
Ambler Borough has the best of both worlds with a small urban atmosphere within the easy living of a suburban setting.
In the 1840′s, the Reading Line began an excursion trip to Gwynedd Valley allowing residents from the city to enjoy a day in the country. Having only one track the line had scheduled stops where the train would park while allowing the passage of an oncoming train
On July 17, 1856, one year after the Wissahickon train line was extended the outbound train was transporting nearly 1000 parents and children for a church picnic. Fifty-nine passengers were killed and another 100 injured. Learning of the accident, a widow named Mary Ambler converted her nearby home into a makeshift hospital and led efforts to care for the injured. Her heroism was memorialized in 1869 by the railroad, which later changed the name of its train station and the community growing around it to Ambler.
